The Square

The buildings along the left-hand side were built in 1767, whilst the Market Tavern and The Crown public houses were probably built about 1680. Inside the Market Tavern was a row of tiny rooms running from front to back, now much modernised of course, but originally used by market traders where they could conduct their business in private over a mug of ale.

These two inns fill one corner of The Square whilst estate agents' offices and the Post Office Sorting Office (built in 1972) fill the opposite corner. Next to the Post Office, an opening leads to St.Mary's Hall, once the National Day Schools. Built originally in 1841, it was converted from the C of E Junior School to its present use after its closure in 1961. Next to the opening is C.G.Williams & Son's renowned prize-winning delicatessen, which was once a police house. The buildings from here to the corner of The Square all date back to about 1760.
